Community is the word used to describe a group of people who all have something in common to one another. While a community does not need a caring environment, Blackman High School’s community provides an accepting and compassionate environment.

Students in the Blackman Cares (compassion, acceptance, respect, empathy, service) Club embody this environment.

Members of Blackman Cares undertake different acts of service throughout the school.

We did a school drive for kids who are labeled as displaced for Atlas,” stated Kelsi McGregor, senior, chairperson of the Blackman Cares Club.

Last year, the club was called Psych Club, a club in which members explored psychology, but McGregor and Lois Walker, sponsor, changed it to Blackman Cares Club.

“We decided that with 1000 new students coming in our building this year, that we wanted to do more for our community,” said Walker.

Because of this change in purpose, more students want to become involved to serve the Blackman community.

McGregor is ready for “the participation that the club is gathering; seeing that this many people want to help as much as I do and as much as Ms. Walker does. It’s good to see it’s growing popularity.”

The club has many ideas planned out for the year already.

Morgan Stephens, sophomore, is looking forward to “finishing the painting project, working on our Trunk or Treat, and then working with the church for our Christmas project for donations.”

Someone can get involved in Blackman Cares Club through donating to projects, getting the word out, and letting others know about club meetings.

Groups at Blackman High School who also supported Atlas in the school drive are Key Club, Blackman Collegiate Academy, the ROCC Church, and the BHS Faculty and Staff.
