At Blackman High School, it is believed that community is of top value. With this, an abundance of activities is offered, with over 50 versatile clubs to choose from. Being a part of the Blackman family by joining extracurriculars brings the school together and teaches new skills, while helping students find their hobbies. A new appearance that everyone is excited about is the Fashion Forward Club!
Led by Mrs. Holl and Mrs. Ramos, Fashion Foward is a club that revolves around pushing individuality, fashion and style. At the same time, they focus on ethically creating designs by reusing old clothing and other items to twist into new, fashionable pieces, tailored to each creator’s imagination as they make it.
“I joined because I always liked fashion, for example Bratz,” tells sophomore Javone Walker, “and I want to get back into sewing.”
Don’t know how to sew? No worries! Experience in designing or sewing is not required. Infact, this club will teach you things from small, simple hand-sewing patterns to the use of sewing machines. There’s a spot for everyone. Meetings are held in Mrs. Holl’s room, C12, every Thursday from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m.
In Fashion Forward, students will learn how to put designs together to articulate their very own pieces. Old, unused items such as ties, shirts and pants are repurposed to create special items like bags and patches. As of now, the club is focused on one project, where they are turning old ties into bits of accent to add onto jeans. At the end of the year, there are plans for a club fashion show competition, in which students will show off all of their club creations!
The club has already attracted around 20 students and counting! Starting in April of last year, they are still looking for more members and are open to new people constantly. There is no deadline for joining, so have no fear! Everyone from any grade is welcome at any time. Prior ISS teacher, Mrs. T, helped form this club idea as well!
“I’m super excited, I was shy talking about it, but Mrs. T wasn’t,” reports Mrs. Holl, “Sewing is a skill we grew up learning in Home Economics Class.”
Currently, they are wanting more equipment as the club grows. They are looking forward to having more sewing machines and an iron. Since the club began late in the 2024-2025 school year, they don’t have as many members as other clubs, so feel free to show up at any meeting!
Looking forward, the club is planning to find competitions for designs. As of right now, there is small talk of a possible spot in the Project Freestyle Fashion Show and Competition with Amelia’s Closet. A project they are anticipating for the future is creating bags and purses out of old clothing. Rather than creating traditional club shirts, Holl and Ramos want to create club patches on pieces of fabric that can be sewn onto clothing, bags, or other pieces of fabric.
Reuse of items is more efficient as opposed to throwing things out or just letting them sit unmoved. Fashion Forward not only cares about keeping you in style, but the environment as well.
