On May 10, 1996, the movie “Twister” was released to the silver screen. It was a killer combination of drama, violent tornadoes, action, and romance that no one could turn down, grossing over $495 million dollars worldwide and having 54.7 million tickets sold in the USA alone. Now, on July 19, 2024, it got a major reboot that sent fans across the world in a storm, “Twisters.”
Written by Joseph Kosinski and directed by Lee Isaac Chung, this film did an incredible job paying homage to the original “Twister.” Instead of a completely different storyline, they kept it close to the original with a few shifts in focus.
In the original, the focus was more on the thrill of the chase for major storms, which resulted in an epic, action-packed thriller. However, in “Twisters” the focus prioritizes relating to the very real and terrifying reality of tornadoes, including the damage they cause. This was an excellent choice on Kosinski’s part, considering the ever-increasing number of dangerous storms and global warming in the past few years. It makes people pause and makes them think.
Being PG-13, this movie may not be suitable for all audiences. It is very fast-paced and can cause anxiousness in specific people, so be warned.
One standout detail about “Twisters” that I absolutely loved was the incredibly vivid VFX. The tornadoes themselves were so detailed and well modeled that I thought they would jump off the screen. This is a huge improvement compared to the original film, which shows embarrassingly outdated VFX techniques. The way the movie was sequenced was incredible as well; it had a wonderful balance of open and close intimate shots, especially when characters exchanged passionate and heartfelt moments.
“Twisters” was not especially known for its famous actors, but there were one or two. One of these actors is Glen Powell, who plays one of the main characters, Tyler Owens. Tyler has a slightly more redneck style when it comes to storm chasing, which brings him tons of followers on his YouTube channel. Powell has been in several other famous films including “The Dark Knight Rises,” “Top Gun: Maverick” and “Hidden Figures.”
Daisy Edgar-Jones is another wonderful actor, playing the main character Kate Carter. Kate is an ex-storm chaser after a traumatic event involving a tornado but is roped in again by a close friend with the motivation to weaken tornadoes completely. Edgar-Jones has also been in several well-known films including “Where the Crawdads Sing.”
Overall, the film was an action-packed masterpiece in my opinion, and I hope you think so, too! You can watch this film at your local theatre, Fandago TV, or Apple TV.
