A transcript check worksheet was provided by teachers before the Academic Expo.

Every year around February and March, students meet with their counselors to talk about their credits and the classes they need to take their next school year.

Remember that to graduate you need 23 credits, which are divided into:

  • 4 credits of English – English I, English II, English III, English IV
  • 4 math credits – Integrated I, II, III, and a fourth higher-level math course
  • 3 science credits- Biology, Chemistry, or Physics, and a third laboratory science, such as anatomy or physical science
  • 3 social studies credits- World History, US History, US Government, and Economics
  • .5 credit of Personal Finance – This is a one-semester class.
  • 1.5 credit of Physical Education- One year you will take Wellness, and the following year PE II, which is a one-semester class.
  • 1 credit- It could be Art I, Chorus, General Music (history of music, and you learn to play an instrument), Band, or Theatre I.
  • 2 foreign language credits – must be 2 credits in the same language. The language options available are Spanish, French, and Latin.
  • 3 credits of a professional approach (Pathway)- In short, a class where you will focus on a career such as Criminal Justice, Arts, STEM, JROTC, Humanities, and Marketing. You must be sure of the pathway you are choosing since once it is chosen, you will not be able to change it. If you are not sure about what class you should take, talk with your counselor.
  •  An elective class/classes- It can be bible, psychology, driving, etc.
  • Another graduation requirement is taking the ACT and the Civics test. (You take the ACT in the spring of junior year; the Civics test is taken in US government class)
  • BCA classes have extra requirements, which are: a .5 credit in Speech (Honors or Dual Enrollment) or Critical Thinking, and a .5 credit of Honors Senior Capstone.

Many people complete most of their credits before their senior year, which leaves some blank spaces on their senior schedule. Many decide to take classes like:

  • Teacher/Office Aid – In which you help a teacher or the central office with whatever they need.
  • Work-Based Learning Career Practicum – You will need to have a job that relates to your Pathway. In this class, you will learn to apply the knowledge obtained in your classes. It will also allow you to interact with professionals and improve your skills in the workplace. To be in this class, you must be a senior and submit an application. For more information contact your counselor.
  • Dual-Enrollment Classes – This class allows you to receive college experience in which you can earn college credit. To be in the class you need to contact your counselor to find out the requirements and start the registration process. Classes are taught by MTSU teachers, and you need a C- to receive credit. For this class, you need to be a junior or senior.

When registering for a class, you must have a basic knowledge about it, what it is about, the work that is done, how much responsibility it requires, if you can handle that responsibility, and more importantly, if you need to audition or apply to be in the class. An example of these types of classes is all choirs (except Concert Choir) and Journalism (The Blackman Voice).

You can find this type of information by talking to your counselor, your friends, and teachers, or through https://bhs.rcschools.net/apps/pages/courses where you will find a catalog with all the classes offered at the school and their descriptions.

Another way of finding information about classes was the “Academic Expo” which was held on Thursday, January 27th during 3rd period on the rotunda and aux gym of the school. At this expo, you had the opportunity of finding information about electives and advanced courses, but also of talking to current students.

Before starting the choosing process, you must check your current High School Transcript and look over how many credits you have and the ones you are missing to graduate. If you don’t know how to do this, here’s a link video with the info: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uZmXAtYft6s and the Transcript Check Paper provided by teachers of the week of the Expo.
