3-D Printing Arrives at Blackman

The 3D printer uses a plastic wire that is fed into a nozzle and then heated to 215 degrees Celsius. The plastic melts and then the computer feeds information to the printer which then prints. There isn’t a specific computer that you need to have to print, but you do need to have a program.

“It’s a combination of the old Playdough fun factories where you’re squeezing something out and the hot glue gun,” Ken Hardison.

Some of things take anywhere from 20 minutes to anywhere around 9 hours. You can make pretty much anything your heart desires with enough time and plastic wire to use.

There are many uses that a 3D printer could be used for. One use found incredibly helpful is its use in the medical field. They can make 3D models of tumors and even a fetus so that the doctor can physically hold it to get a more hands on experience.

“I think that it not only makes cool objects, but it has applications in real life, and can help society,” says Patrick Owen, sophomore.

Another thing that this could be good for is education. This could work for all grades in many different areas of the school. It can also provide an understanding of technology for people interesting in how it works.
