“The Runaway King” is a middle-fantasy adventure book written by Jennifer A. Nielsen. It features the main character, Jaron, who must make many hard decisions for the good of his kingdom and the rumored upcoming war.
As the second book in the Ascendance Series and a young adult novel, “The Runaway King,” along with the other books in the series, has become Nielsen ‘s most popular and well-known work.
Jaron, who has now only been king for a few weeks, must deal with the rumors of war. As if that wasn’t enough, he has to escape his own assassination without drawing too much attention to himself. Deserting becomes his only option to save his kingdom.
“The Runaway King” is a continuation of “The False Prince” and expands the world with a more political and risky tone. It deepens the connections between Jaron and other key characters like Tobias and Roden while also allowing new characters to take the spotlight. Much of Jaron’s character is expanded upon and given more layers for the reader to enjoy.
While the story is a great addition to “The Ascendance Series,” certain characters lack much explanation. Certain things are left very open-ended to reader interpretation, even when these things seem central to the plot. This story also dives deeper into romantic relationships between the main cast, causing much of the action to be overshadowed by the growing romantic bonds. However, the side story of friendship and brotherly love is incredibly well-written.
As a whole, the book is amazing for readers who want an action-packed story with two romance subplots and more of Jaron’s sass.
Available in hardcover, paperback, digital, and audiobook format, “The Runaway King” can be purchased almost anywhere you can buy books. For past readers of “The False Prince,” “The Runaway King” is a perfect fit.
