In time for our Halloween season, we were gifted with an amazing second season of the Netflix show “Wednesday.” It lengthens the story of teenager Wednesday Addams from the popular show “The Addams Family.”
The show first aired in 1964 on ABC TV Network, where it captured the attention of thousands. However, this was not the first time the characters appeared to the public. They were created quite a few years earlier in 1938 by Charles Addams, who made single-panel cartoons for “The New Yorker.”
These kooky characters didn’t acquire any names until the show began in 1964, and they’re original purpose was to be a satirical version of the ideal American family in day-to-day life, shot in black and white. Wednesday’s name was derived from the poem “Monday’s Child” by British novelist Anna Eliza Bray in 1838, specifically the line “Wednesday’s child is full of woe.”
In 1966, unfortunately ratings were not as high for the second season, so the show was cancelled and taken off air. Later, multiple movies were made, including “The Addams Family” in 1991, the first Addams Family movie to be produced.
On Nov. 23, 2022, the first season of “Wednesday” appeared on Netflix. In the spin off, the daughter of Morticia and Gomez Addams, Wednesday Addams, is sent to Nevermore Academy, a fictional boarding school meant for worldly “outcasts” who possess some sort of odd ability.
With her emerging psychic abilities beginning, she sets off on a hunt for a ravenous monster that had been raging through the area for some time. At the same time, she unknowingly uncovers a long-hidden secret about her parents’ past at Nevermore, and even more that the strange school has to offer.
The show immediately took the media by storm with people sharing their voiced opinions on the first season. Analyses came out, and people even pointed out certain dynamics they noticed.
“Wednesday’s character is caring, but she doesn’t show it through words, she shows it through actions,” voiced senior Jouner Girgis.
On Aug. 6 of this year, Netflix released half of a new season for the show, and it was an immediate hit. Clips of the show and people giving their opinions flooded social media such as TikTok. Nearly one month later, on Sept. 3, part two of the season was put out, and once again the internet erupted.
The season has achieved around 107 million views and is expected to continue to grow upon Halloween time. In the new chapter of the story, Wednesday and Pugsley return to Nevermore once more, and after saving the school the year prior, had acquired a major target on their back, but from who?
From a personal point of view, the show was fantastic. The plot manages to hold many twists and turns, creating a thrilling and chilling viewing experience.
“A thriller,” senior Nathan Alemayehu reports, “it has a lot of suspense.”
As of now, it has been confirmed that a third season is in the works with returning characters. Fans are already excited and ready to watch Wednesday’s adventure unfold.
