First dates can be exciting and nerve-racking. Furthermore, they can end up on a good note or a bad note. Many students have experienced the roller coaster of emotions and anxieties that first date stories tell.
Starting with the bad experiences, first dates can be awkward and uncomfortable. Sophomore Mary Hineen said, “The guy tried to kiss me, on the first date when we barely knew each other, it was extremely awkward.” Word of advice, do not touch someone without permission or use large gestures on the first date.”
Now for good experiences, first dates can be enjoyable and worthwhile. Entertaining dating ideas could be going to a bookstore, thrift store, bowling alley, or picnics. You can also bake, watch a movie, try a new restaurant, or coffee shop together.
“We went to Go USA and played golf and other games and took photos today.” Sophomore Amber Koralewski said, sharing her favorite experience of a good first date.
Here are a few extra tips for a first date:
- Being well groomed can be a great confidence booster. You look your best; you feel your best.
- Make eye contact with your date while they are talking to appear focused and interested in the conversation.
- Be prepared by having conversation topic ideas and outfit ideas to ease your nervousness. If you are going to a restaurant, take a glimpse of the menu beforehand.
- For nerves, take deep breaths.
- If you are leading the date or planning the date, plan in advance.
Overall, dating is an ever-changing experience with its positive and not so great moments. But keep calm and persevere with confidence. If the date does not go well, learn from it. Accept that it is okay, and that there are going to be plenty of opportunities.
