On Aug. 23, the stars of “The Last of Us” and “Apex Legends,” Troy Baker and Erika Ishii, hosted the Future Games Show at GamesCom 2023. The show aired at 8 pm CEST and featured over 40 different games for Xbox, PS5, Nintendo Switch and PC. Here are the top five announcements that you should get excited about:
1.) Ak-xolotl
Starring the world’s most adorable amphibian, “Ak-xolotl” is a top-down action roguelike all about causing massive mayhem! Play as an axolotl that is as cute as he is chaotic, while also gathering delicious collectables. Select your weapon of choice and slash your way through a variety of biomes and areas. This game is being made by developer 2Awesome and is set to release on Sept. 14, 2023.

2.) Symphonia
In this 2D platformer, embark on a journey through the beautiful world of Symphonia. You play the game as Philemon, a lone musician equipped only with a violin bow. The impressively hand-drawn environment is reminiscent of other popular games such as “Hollow Knight” and “Have a Nice Death.” Sunny Peak at Headup Games is developing “Symphonia,” and it will be released later next year.
“I love the art style and the animations, especially for the main character. I also love how it incorporates music in the environment and background,” said Everett Whittington, a junior.

3.) It’s a Wrap!
Become the director of a blockbuster film in “It’s a Wrap!” In this unique 2d puzzle platformer, you must rearrange a sequence of events to ensure that each scene is done according to the script. From prison breaks to high-speed chase scenes, it’s up to you to create the perfect cinematic masterpiece that captivates audiences around the globe! “It’s a Wrap!” was developed by Chanko Studios and released shortly after GamesCom on Aug. 31.

4.) Underlab
From the creators of Project Winter, “Underlab” is a social deception game where players take on separate roles in a secret underwater laboratory. Conduct experiments for The Organization but watch out for spies in our midst attempting to steal the company’s secrets! Failure to finish experiments will cause complete destruction of the lab and you with it. “Underlab” is being developed by Other Ocean Interactive and has yet to receive a release date.

5.) Europa
A demo is out on Steam for developer Helder Pinto’s new game: “Europa.” Solve the mysteries of this fallen utopia as you run, jump and glide through the world. Take on the role of Zee, an android in search of answers about its unknown past. The beautiful cartoon world of Europa was inspired by the work of Studio Ghibli. Published by Future Friends Games, “Europa” is set to release in 2024.
