Recently, The Blackman Voice Staff caught up with our Athletes of The Month for February of 2022. Congratulations to Emily Monson and Sumo Scaife. 

Emily Monson, Junior, Basketball 

How many years have you been playing basketball? 

Monson: I’ve been playing basketball for 7 years.  

Do you plan to continue playing basketball after high school? 

Monson: Yes, I plan to continue my basketball career in college at Purdue. 

What is your favorite thing about playing basketball? 

Monson: My favorite thing about basketball is the competition.  

Do you have any advice for other athletes? 

Monson: Outwork everyone and don’t listen to “outside noise.” 

What is a fun fact about you? 

Monson: My birthday is on New Year’s Eve on December 31st.  

Sumo Scaife, Senior, Basketball 

How many years have you been playing basketball? 

Scaife: I’ve been playing basketball since I was 5. 

Do you plan to continue playing basketball after high school? 

Scaife: I plan on playing after high school and I’m in the process of figuring out where now.  

What is your favorite thing about playing basketball? 

Scaife: The flow and freedom basketball can bring to a player like a getaway.  

Do you have any advice for other athletes? 

Scaife: You control your outcome, put in the work early so you can rest later. 

What is a fun fact about you? 

Scaife: The nickname Sumo has been around since I was 2.
