Blackman basketball sweeps 2021 district 7-AAA tournament
The 2021 District 7–AAA boys and girls basketball tournaments were originally scheduled for February 15-23. A week of inclement weather that included record snowfall pushed things back a bit, but that didn’t stop the Blaze, nor the Lady Blaze as Blackman swept the district tournament championships on Friday.
On the girls’ side, the Lady Blaze came into the tournament as the favorites as they were the #1 seed based on the district standings in the regular season. In the semifinals, Blackman made quick work of 5 seed Rockvale as they annihilated the Lady Rockets by a score of 62-18. The Lady Blaze also had little trouble in the district championship game as they defeated 3 seed Oakland 50-26 to capture the district crown and a #1 seed in the region tournament.
On the boys’ side, the Blaze came into the tournament as the #2 seed just behind Siegel who were Blackman’s only two losses in the regular season in district play. In the semifinals, Blackman took care of #3 seed Stewarts Creek at home by a margin of 52-44. The Blaze had to travel to Siegel for the district championship game and erased a 10-point deficit with 5 minutes left in the game to defeat the #1 seed Stars 56-53 to get a #1 seed in the district tournament and their second straight district championship.
The Blaze and Lady Blaze now shift their focus to the Region 4-AAA tournament. Tonight, both teams will take on Columbia in the first round. The girls game starts at 6:00, the boys game starts at 7:30, and both games are at The Furnace.
