Social Media Awareness Week
“Pause before you post” is the message during National Social Media Awareness Week, January 30th – February 3rd.
Here at Blackman High School, Holly Hunter, Technology Specialist, and other faculty members have created a week with activities dedicated to educating the student body about being responsible on social media.
Highlights of the week will include students taking a cyber-bullying self-assessment and a video from our school SROs, giving their angle on the legal consequences of social media.
“I hope it makes them at least stop and think that they need to consider their social media life and pause before they post, instead of putting things out there,” said Hunter.
Teachers, along with students will give their input on the impact social media makes in our lives. There will be a classroom discussion about social media on Monday.
“We are realizing more and more that social media can be a powerful tool for good and change, but it can also be used as a weapon to inflict pain on others. It is imperative that students be taught the power and impact of their voices, both in person and online” said Andrea Holder, English teacher.
During lunch on Wednesday through Friday, students can sign a banner that pledges them to commit to internet safety.
“I believe social media awareness is vital especially with the era we live in. So many things happen through social media that we don’t acknowledge and it affects everyone one way or another” said Brithany Gavidia, senior.
