Blackman’s Got Game: Basketball Homecoming 2017
Basketball Homecoming is an exciting time of year for many students.
“I’m a senior, so this is my last homecoming. It’s got to be special,” stated Rhyan Lake, student body president.
Homecoming Week, January 17th-20th, will also feature some cool activities. The Canned Food Drive is a new Homecoming activity this year. Students should bring cans or money for their class to have an advantage to win the Spirit Stick at the Homecoming pep rally. Turn canned food or money in outside the cafeteria before school or during lunch.
Another fun activity is themed dress-up days. Tuesday is the day of the big, the bad, and the brainy. Officially called Cranium Day, all Urkels, Einsteins, and Sheldon Coopers are welcomed. Dress up to be the Geek of the Week.
Wednesday is Life. Otherwise known as Career Day, the student body is encouraged to dress up and represent their career of choice. Showcase your ambition with your inner artist, entrepreneur, or politician.
Thursday’s highlight is an intramural volleyball game. We will be on pep rally schedule. The cost to attend is two dollars; tickets are available at the bank Tuesday or Wednesday during lunch or Thursday before school.
“I feel like it’s gonna be a good time,” stated junior volleyball player Paz Dozie-Nnamah.
Sorry, Thursday’s not quite the end of the week, but there’s still room for enthusiasm. On Sorry Day, both upper and underclassmen are encouraged to wear the school’s colors. Juniors and Seniors should wear blue and Freshman and Sophomores should wear orange.
Friday will conclude the week’s events. Bring your energy for Spirit Day. All of Blackman should come representing the school and the basketball team with your Blaze gear.
Friday’s lunch is the always fun Blaze Bonanza. Don’t forget to bring extra money for lunch! You will have your choice of Chic-Fil-A, Chinese, pizza, and other items. Proceeds go to support your favorite club.
Spirit Day will also be on pep rally schedule. The homecoming court will be presented during the pep rally. For those going to the basketball game, the Homecoming King and Court will be announced.
“I’m looking forward to it. It should be fun,” stated junior Jania Boddie.
Tickets for the games are on sale at the bank for $5 dollars Tuesday- Thursday. On Friday they will cost $7.
The celebration doesn’t have to end there. Blackman High School is hosting its first homecoming dance in five years, and tickets can be purchased for $15 at the bank. You can also pay at the door.
In addition, 15% of the proceeds from the dance will be donated to the Books From Birth organization, which strives to provide books to young children, encouraging early literacy and strong minds.
That is a rundown of the week’s events. Bring your Blackman pride, and show that you’re proud to be a part of the Blaze community!
