Blazercise

Before the first quarter over, Blackman High School will be seeing a change in physical activity.

With the state having concerns on the amount of exercise students get, changes are mandatory. It is undecided yet as to how much the schedule will be rearranged, but Dr. Leisa Justus, principal, is trying to make it work.

The state of Tennessee has requirement as to how many hours of physical activity a week a school is required to have. Now the exercise requirement has been changed to “non-structured.” This means that the time walking to and from class cannot be included in the total amount of activity.

Blackman High has some ideas on what to do, and Justus is excited about the changes. She was unsure about it at first, but research shows that the benefits outweighed the negatives.

“It’s the right thing to do,” stated Justus.

Exercise in some form will be added to the Blackman students’ daily routine, and teachers will encourage more movement. Ideas have been tossed around, and Justus is currently narrowing down the options.

Blackman is ready to follow this state policy and take on the physical activity addition to its curriculum to promote healthy, active students.
