Seven Survival Strategies for the ACT

. . . as told from a veteran of the whimsical land of stress and multiple choice tests.

  1. Get the correct amount of sleep. Both an overactive and a sluggish brain are harmful.
  2. Have a protein-filled breakfast, such as eggs and bacon, and a sugary snack, like orange juice and animal crackers, for the break.
  3. If you suffer from test anxiety, take a deep breath. Panic is the enemy. You can retake this test; in fact, it’s encouraged.
  4. On the math section, skip problems that seem like they will require more time. Come back to them at the end if you have time.
  5. If you’re torn between several answers on the English section, choose the shortest answer. It’s usually right.
  6. On the science section, try reading the questions first. Don’t get overwhelmed by all the information.
  7. Resist the urge to bubble a Christmas tree. You’ll regret it later.
