Choir Boasts Midstate and Allstate Winners

This year, Blackman High School had the most students in Midstate or Allstate in Rutherford county with 23 students.

Adrien Fitzwater, senior, got second chair overall for tenors (the highest chair that the men’s and women’s choir offers) and first chair in his choir. “I’ve been doing choir for like twelve years. It’s just an ongoing thing,” said Fitzwater, who also performed in the choir’s Veterans’ Day concert.

Nia Morris, senior, decided to try out last year after switching schools. Morris placed at her first school and decided to try out for Blackman. “Performing is extremely important to me, and I’ve been performing for a very long time,” Morris said.

Daniel Suarez, senior, tried out for choir Midstate and Allstate for the first time this year. “I wanted to try something new, and it worked out,” he said. Suarez made the third alternate for Allstate.

The choir students prepared pieces before auditioning. “Usually Blackman places between 10 and 15 students,” said Mr. Patton, choir director.

Patton attributes this year’s success to preparation, including a clinic hosted at Stewart’s Creek High School. “The students worked really hard to learn the audition music,” Patton said.

Midstate singers will travel to Nashville November 16th and 17th. The Allstate auditions are held in February.

The Blackman choir program performs several times throughout the year, including a Christmas concert and a salute to veterans on Veterans’ Day. The next event is a Black History concert on February 29th.
