On TikTok, a new trend and debate have started: “Quarter Zip vs. Nike Tech.” The trend has taken on a life of its own. What started as lighthearted outfit comparisons has evolved into a full-blown cultural trend, shaping how mostly young men present themselves online and in person. It’s more than just clothing and aesthetics: it’s a new lifestyle.
The quarter zip and Nike Tech TikTok trend has been gaining a lot of attention lately, especially on TikTok and Instagram. A quarter zip is a sweatshirt often associated with suburban dads, golf courses, and finance interns, but it has been rebranded by TikTok. Now, it’s seen as the “clean boy” and put-together aesthetic. Nike Tech is mostly associated with athletes, streetwear, and gym culture; it’s become the go-to fit for guys who want a more urban, athletic energy. Nike Techs have also become a status symbol because of their premium price tag and design.
The Quarter Zip vs. Nike Tech trend on TikTok is turning clothing items into personality traits. Videos comparing the two styles often play off exaggerated stereotypes and are essentially meant to come off as funny satire. A Quarter Zip is meant to represent the polite guy who will hold the door open, while the Nike Tech represents rebellion or being “nonchalant.” Quarter zips have essentially become the face of a specific kind of guy considered approachable and academically inclined. This shows how TikTok can take something and rebrand it through different challenges and trends.
“I think the war between quarter zips and Nike Techs is dumb, and I think they shouldn’t prove whether somebody is cool, and they shouldn’t let fashion bros on TikTok tell them what to wear. Hashtag be your own person,” says sophomore Linkin Goddard.
Other things have also become popular and categorized as “performative” ( or expressed insincerely or inauthentically, typically with the intention of impressing others or improving one’s own image) on TikTok because of trends like drinking matcha, wearing glasses, reading, using wired earbuds, wearing Labubu keychains, listening to certain women musicians like Clairo or Laufey, and more.
“I love drinking matcha and wearing quarter zips,” says sophomore Caleb Hyde.
Both the quarter zip and Nike Tech suit have found their place in people’s everyday wear and lifestyle, each offering a different type of comfort, confidence, and cultural meaning. This trend highlights how fashion continues to evolve through social media.
This trend reveals something fascinating about modern fashion culture. Clothing has become symbolic in TikTok culture. Both clothing items are simple, yet they’ve taken on larger meanings because TikTok users connect them to specific behaviors, music choices, and lifestyles.
