The College Football Playoff (CFP) National Championship is one of the most highly anticipated events in sports every year. This year’s National Championship featured two programs rich in history, Ohio State and Notre Dame.
Ohio State won the first CFP championship in 2014 but has not won one since then. They have been in multiple playoffs but have had some heartbreaking defeats since their 2014 campaign.
Ohio State also had the hardest playoff bracket to get through to get to the championship game, but they cruised through the first three rounds to meet Notre Dame for it all.
On the other side Notre Dame is looking to snap a long streak of not having won a National Championship since 1988.
During the coin flip they honored Martin Luther King JR and had his youngest daughter there at mid field during the coin flip. This game was also held on MLK day.
Notre Dame started with the ball and started fast as quarterback Riley Leonard scored to go up 7-0.
Then Ohio State responded with a touchdown of their own, as Jeremiah Smith scored from eight yards out to tie the game at seven. Then running back Quinshon Judkins added on with two touchdowns of his own to put Ohio State up 21-7 going into halftime.
Judkins then scored a third time as he put Ohio State ahead 28-7. They then added on a 46-yard field goal to make the score 31-7.
Notre Dame then responded with a 34-yard touchdown by Jaden Greathouse and a 2-point conversion to make the score 31-15. Greathouse scored again and with another 2-point conversion to make it a one score game in quarter four.
Even though Notre Dame made a last second push Ohio State iced the game with a 56-yard reception from Jeremiah Smith that led to a 33-yard field goal to end the game 34-23.
Ohio State won their second national championship in the CFP era and the first ever twelve team playoff championship. But now that college athletes can be paid there are chances at a lot of dark horses that will have a chance next January in next year’s National Championship game.
