As the number of users grows every day on social media, the need for entertainment grows as well. Trends rise and trends fall; however, the effect of the trend in between those two periods is what counts. Google’s definition of overconsumption can be defined as “the action or fact of consuming something to excess”. Why is this a problem? Over the past months, a trend has grown exponentially along with the rise of influencers.
The trend; overconsuming commercial goods. These goods range from body scrubs and makeup to the newest bags and clothing. Simply buying these products is not the issue; however, buying these products simply to show them off and not use them is where the problem arises.
“It’s so bad… people are just wasting money” Senior Quincy Dismore explains, while displaying a dismal look.
While on the other hand, Broderick Richards, a Blackman senior, had a conflicting viewpoint.
“I think it is goated; we should consume more!” he expressed.
While this “trend” is relatively new we won’t see many drawbacks yet, but one can assume this can tamper with not only the market values of certain items but also the image portrayed of the “everyday American”. Trends like this can seem fun and of no harm; yet, when you mix it with younger and influential audiences, the line between wants and needs becomes blurred.
