When you wake up on Thanksgiving morning, you go into the living room and turn on the TV to the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. This nostalgic feeling is what most love about the holiday season. Thanksgiving is a popular holiday for the amazing feast most families have.
Food is a big part of the Thanksgiving holiday. Some of the most popular foods are turkey, gravy, apple pie, cornbread dressing, mac and cheese, southern pecan pie, bread rolls, green bean casserole, cranberry salad, deviled eggs, pumpkin and much more. Thanksgiving is known for the amazing food families have during the holidays.
Not only is Thanksgiving about all the delicious food we indulge in, but it is also a time for family.
“On Thanksgiving my whole family goes to my grandma’s house, and we eat and watch the Thanksgiving Day parade,” says Junior Brookyln Bennett.
You may go to a loved one’s house to spend time with them, or you may go out with friends. No matter who you are with, it is about spending time with those you love.
Thanksgiving is also a time to think about everything you are grateful for. This may look like going around the dinner table and saying one thing you are thankful for. We all had the experience in elementary school where we would make a turkey and write things we are thankful for on the feathers to decorate the turkey. Another version of this turkey is the hand or footprints, but this is most common for young children. Some may have also made a grateful tree.
Some easy ways to show gratitude are acts of kindness or simply complimenting others. Gratitude is such an easy thing to show that sometimes it is overlooked. In such a detached digital world, use this time to talk with family that you don’t get to see every day. Family is such a special thing that we shouldn’t take for granted.
Most spend the holiday eating food and giving thanks, but there are many ways to celebrate.
Senior Savannah Mejia says, “the only odd thing we do is we all cook certain dishes for the dinner so it’s kind of like a potluck.”
While this tradition still revolves around food, it is a fun way to spice things up and get a variety of dishes to try new things.
Another fun tradition for Thanksgiving is games! Games are a fun family bonding experience but may create some competition. My family loves to play “aggravation” on all holidays because it is fun and competitive. We play other games as well to spend time together but with something a little more fun.
Thanksgiving is such a great and fun holiday with its food, parade, gratitude and games. As Thanksgiving is quickly approaching, think about what you’re thankful for and spend quality time with loved ones.
