The Blackman High School golf team has been playing around two times a week and getting better each time.
“They all are playing well. Our work ethic has been amazing, and I am excited about starting district tournament play on Monday,” stated Coach Barry Wortman.
The golfers arrive to their competitions early and practice for a while before they even start competing, as well as extensive practice outside of competitions.
Senior Benjamin Wade has been playing golf for eight years. His best score this season is a 73.
“In the past year, my game has become more consistent, and my putting has improved,” said Wade.
Senior Austin Reizner has also been golfing for years, with his best score being a 71. He also tied for fifth place at the district tournament.
“I feel I’ve improved a lot, my scores got lower. I’ve been practicing a lot just throughout the years,” stated Reizner.
Even though golf is an individual sport, the team aspect is still important. It is always more motivating having a group of people to support you and have people in the same sport to relate to.
“The team dynamic this year has been the best it has ever been. Everyone hangs out on and off course, and there is great communication within the group,” said Wade.
Golf in college can be an extremely competitive setting, and it is important for anyone who wants to attempt to do so to put in a lot of work. Both seniors on the Blackman High School golf team have shown a serious amount of dedication to their sport whilst working towards their goals.
“I’d like to play golf in college, but there’s still lots of progress to be made,” stated Wade.
Reizner feels the same way.
“I do want to play golf in college, I’m going to try to as hard as I can,” said Reizner.
With the seniors working hard to make their last year count, and all the other people on the team supporting them and cheering them on, both seniors are excited for what is to come of the golf team in the future.
“We have some very talented freshmen on the team this year,” stated Wade.
The seniors are encouraging and helping the younger people on the team to become the best they can be, and they have a lot of confidence that they will do great in the future. To end the season this year, the golf team came in second for the district, proving they have the potential for next year.
