The Blackman High School volleyball team begins their second season under head coach Macie Pringle. They are led by two star-studded seniors, Ashley Adair and McKenzie McCormick.
“We are a young team, and our seniors’ consistency and ability to perform in big situations is vital” assistant coach Alexander Mullane commented.
Together they are showing a great amount of improvement. They have already led the team to more victories than last season, going 4-8 though the first month of the season.
This year’s team’s chemistry is the foundation of their success. The JV teams are known for creating their own student section-like environment, cheering their teammates on. This has not only encouraged the players but has also made more students attend the games, wanting to experience the environment.
“I love the team and all the different friendships I’ve built with my teammates. I know that with them we can all have a great time but still focus and compete together, and it makes the atmosphere so fun,” Adair commented.
Adair and McCormick do not only lead their team during daily practices and game days, but off the court as well.
McCormick has been a part of Blackman’s volleyball team since freshman year and has improved each year. She plays as an outside hitter and was named All-District player last season. Her stats are averaging above the national average in almost every category. She leads Blackman in both serving aces and receptions. She also places third in the district in hitting percentage.
Adair, on the other hand, is rejoining the team after spending last season in California. She plays as an opposite hitter. Her vocal presence on the court was missed during her season away.
“I love watching Ashley play because she just exhibits joy, and you can just see it when she plays that she loves it,” senior Maddie Grace Womble stated.
Adair’s hitting percentage is averaging above national averages as well.
Since the senior duo has been reunited, they have been able to provide advice, encouragement, and support to their teammates through the ups and downs of the season.
Adair and McCormick’s leadership and legacy will outlive their time at Blackman, as their teammates will continue to revamp the school’s volleyball team. The team will be more experienced in the coming years, and players will continue to evolve individually.
Come out and support them on Sept. 26 for senior night! Game one starts at 5 p.m.
