As the audience applauded furiously under the bright lights of Geodis Stadium, Lionel Messi, in all his glory, scored a goal in the Nashville SC net, guaranteeing Inter Miami the new winners of the Leagues Cup. However, for those who see beyond the public eye, they realized one thing: this is the beginning of a new era for soccer in the United States.
On Dec. 18, 2022, Messi won his first World Cup title with Argentina, wrapping up the biggest and most desired accomplishment in his career. After the World Cup, his fans waited eagerly expectant of Messi’s next move in his career; however, they did not expect him to announce on June 7, 2023, his new contract with Inter Miami SC, as it meant leaving his long set roots in Europe for the first time.
“I made the decision that I’m going to go to Miami,” Messi said in an interview with sport newspapers.
“I still haven’t closed it a hundred percent. I’m still missing a few things, but we decided to go ahead. If Barcelona didn’t work out, I wanted to leave Europe, get out of the spotlight and think more about my family,” he stated.
Like a match made in heaven, Messi’s addition to Major League Soccer (MLS) has lifted it to new heights by increasing ticket pricing, merchandise, and viewers.
“I don’t want to say we underestimated Messi coming to the MLS, but it’s been unbelievably impactful to our league across all points,” said Camilo Durana, executive vice president of club services and fan development at MLS.
In fact, according to resale websites, the cheapest ticket for an Inter Miami match was just $29. However, 24 hours after it was confirmed that Messi would be playing, the cheapest ticket now is $329.
The famous footballer’s arrival in the MLS has served as a marketing tactic as well, converting him into an inspiring figure that motivates the other players to be at his level, and growing a sense of admiration even from his opponents. His drive, passion, technique and sportsmanship are just some of the qualities he possesses, which have changed the game for soccer in the U.S.
“Lionel Messi joining Inter Miami marks a historic moment for the sport in the U.S. and reflects the incredible momentum behind Major League Soccer,” said Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vice president of Services. “We couldn’t be more excited to give fans around the world the opportunity to watch the greatest footballer of all time on MLS Season Pass.”
Messi will continue to make history in the U.S., inspire others to join the sport, and begin a whole new culture about soccer in the United States.
“When David and I first met and we dreamt of what Inter Miami represents, it started off with the freedom to dream,” Jose Mas, co-owner of Inter-Miami, said. “And we dreamed of not only bringing elite players and the best players but the best player to ever don boots – and his name is Lionel Andrés Messi.”
