The Colorado Buffaloes opened their season at Amon G. Carter Stadium, home of the Texas Christian University (TCU) Horned frogs, where a thriller was played. The runner up for the national championship faced Colorado’s new head coach, the one and only Deion “Primetime” Sanders. This was a game that the college football fan base was waiting for.
The Buffaloes’ season last year was rough, as they went 1-11 and ended up firing head coach Karl Dorrel after five games as offensive coordinator. Mike Sanford Jr. was the interim coach for the rest of the season. On Dec. 3, Rick George, Colorado’s athletic director, announced that prime would be their next head coach for their football program. Sanders came from Jackson State University (JSU), bringing his son Shedeur Sanders, quarterback (QB) and five-star wide receiver (WR) and cornerback (CB) Travis Hunter with him.
On the other TCU had a magical run as they ended up in the national championship before getting absolutely crushed by the Georgia Bulldogs 65-7. QB Max Duggan was a key part to their success but was drafted by the Los Angeles Chargers in the seventh round of the 2023 draft.
The game started off positive for the Colorado offense as Sheduer found running back (RB) Dylan Edwards for a 4-yard reception touchdown (TD).
TCU strikes back in the second quarter as RB Trey Sanders ran it in for a seven-yard rushing TD.
Then Colorado scored on a 2-yard rush by RB Sy’veon Wilkerson to make it 14-7 Buffaloes.
Trey Sanders got his second TD of the game after his 4-yard rushing TD tying the game at 14.
Colorado’s kicker Jace Feely then put the Buffaloes up by 3 after a 49-yard Field Goal (FG) as the score was 17-14 Colorado going into halftime.
The Buffaloes came out of halftime firing with a 75-yard touchdown catch from Dylan Edwards to put Colorado up 24-14.
TCU struck back with a 21-yard TD catch from tight end (TE) Jared Wiley to cut the Buffaloe’s lead to 24-21. TCU then took the lead after WR Dylan Wright’s 23-yard TD reception putting them up 28-24.
Then Edwards got a seven-yard TD run, putting the Buffaloes up 31-28.
TCU took the lead back after QB Chandler Morris ran for a 19-yard touchdown to put his team up 35-31.
Colorado then took the lead back after WR Jimmy Horn Jr. caught a 26-yard touchdown to put his team up 38-35.
Trey Sanders then took the lead back for TCU after his single yard TD rush put them up 42-38. Following this Dylan Edwards caught a 46-yard touchdown. Then the Colorado defense was able to come up with a stop, resulting in a Buffalo win in Coach Prime’s first game as Colorado’s head coach.
“I think Prime will turn the team around and they will make the college football playoffs,” stated Allan Niles, sophomore at Blackman High School.
Coach Prime received a lot of criticism for what he did in the offense as the team has 86 new players on the roster, including nine from JSU. One of the new players to the roster is Blackman alumni Jacob Page.
“I think Sheduer is legit, and he is a top ten QB in college football,” exclaimed Niles.
Shedeur Sanders had a historic performance going 38/47 and 510 passing yards with four passing touchdowns. His 510 passing yards sets the school record for passing yards, and it was his first game in a Buffalo uniform.
“I think it’s crazy how he came from JSU and in his first game he set the schools passing yard record, and I think Colorado is a contender for the national championship,” stated Alex Ellis, sophomore at Blackman High School.
TCU will try to bounce back next weekend as they host 0-1 Nicholls State. Colorado will try to keep it rolling during their home opener as they host 0-1 Nebraska.
