As Blackman prepared for the first football game of the year on Aug. 18, hopes were flying high as all four grade levels entered the gym for the first pep rally. Each class had prepared their own chants and were dressed to show their pride.
“It was a great start to the school year and football season. Every class seemed super involved. I also loved sitting on the steps of the bleachers surrounded by my friends,” said senior Chase Bowes
Just like the start of the 2022-2023 season, Blackman started by playing Brentwood; however, this time it was on their home turf. Both teams’ student sections were maxed out as the game began. The Blaze Band played their tunes and kept the energy flowing, even when things started to take an unfortunate turn for the Blaze.
“Like a shooting star streaking across the night sky, our energy lasted long after we lost,” said senior trumpet player Michael Reed.
During half time, although their team was down, the Blaze Band performed their entire show “DISCO!” led by Drum Majors Keller Hosman, Caroline Smith, and Luke Perez. The Brentwood Band did not perform their own show, but they still came out and supported their team. After the show, they came over to compliment and congratulate their Blackman counterparts.
“We were able to see some positives from Friday night’s loss to Brentwood. We need to continue to focus on the little things and come to practice each day with a mindset to improve,” said head coach Matt Kriesky.
Blackman lost 14-37. However, the team still has hope for the next game. Now they know what they need to work on, and what they need to do to succeed.
“We moved the ball really well on offense we just need a couple things to go right and we’re in a great spot,” said senior football player Carter Gregory.
Congrats to Brentwood on winning their first game. The Blackman football team, the band, the teachers and the students are all excited for their next game against the Stewarts Creek Red Hawks. Come out and support the Blaze Football Team at their away game Aug. 25 starting at 8pm.
