Taking Backstrokes to Regionals

On Friday, January 27th at Centennial Sportsplex, the Blackman High School swim team competed in the regional swim event.

The event included 12 of the Blackman High School swimmers, including first time competitors. One swimmer even qualified to further himself to state.

“I was proud that everyone who competed swam regional qualifying times, and many swam their best times for the season,” stated swimming coach Natalie McDowell.

McDowell has had at least one swimmer each year in the recent years to qualify on to the state event, and this year’s swimmer was Noah Boyd, freshman.

“I was really excited about that because I am a freshman, and I was the only one to go. I was really honored that I was able to do that,” stated Boyd.

Boyd competed in the state event, competing in the 100 yard backstroke.

Both teams, girls and boys, had a solid season. The boys team even went undefeated heading into regionals.

“I have swimmers set goals for themselves, whether it is to make regionals or state or to just get better each time they compete. I feel like even though not all swimmers met their goal, they accomplished a lot and should be happy with their accomplishments,” said McDowell.

Timothy Gardner, junior, mentioned that he finished in the top 25 for both of his events, and he plans on continuing his practice heading into his senior year.

“I am proud of the team and how much we worked this year. I can’t wait to see what next year will bring,” stated sophomore Claudia Kersting.

Every player met their own accomplishments this year, and the coaches are looking forward to a great season next year as well.
