Former Blackman Standout Emerges: The Blue Raiders’ Newest Star

November 14, 2016

One of the most intriguing storylines of MTSU’s football season to date is the success of running back transferee I’Tavius Mathers.

Mathers, who is a former standout at Blackman High School, spent his first three collegiate seasons at the University of Mississippi. He transferred to Middle Tennessee at the end of the 2014 season, his junior year, and because of NCAA transfer rules, was forced to sit out the entirety of the 2015 season, his senior year, at MTSU.

For Mathers, the decision to come back home was a simple one.

“Really just being able to be back around my family. I [also] look forward to seeing old teachers and old classmates.”

Sentimental value aside, Mathers’ move has also been a fruitful one. I’Tavius was forced to sit out his first season as a Blue Raider because of NCAA regulations, but he was still allowed to practice with the team and be a part of any team related activities. Also, in his year away from the field, he was able to graduate and earn his degree.

With a year under his belt to acclimate to a new offense and new surroundings, and to also eliminate the stress of academic work, I’Tavius was ready to burst into a star during his final year of eligibility in 2016.

He has not disappointed.

Mathers is currently ranked 9th in the nation in rushing yards with 1,145 on an impressive 6.7 yards per carry and 12 touchdowns to boot. What makes his accomplishments even more impressive is that he is doing so in an offense that has a heavy commitment to the passing game. MTSU has thrown the ball about 125 more times than they have ran it.

“I always want to be successful, but I never expected this, and it’s a humbling experience.”

Mathers has helped MTSU to its respectable 6-3 record, which currently has them seated at 3rd place in Conference USA. With 3 games left in the season, there is still plenty of time for Mathers and the Blue Raiders to build on this success.

“Hopefully, we can make it to the conference championship. I am all about winning.”

But it doesn’t end there for Mathers. He is down to his final year of collegiate eligibility, so this year hasn’t only been his last, but also an audition for the next level. The NFL has always been a dream of Mathers, and with the numbers he has put up this year, it doesn’t seem like such a long shot.

“I think I have a chance. God can take care of the rest.”

Blackman is certainly proud of the things I’Tavius Mathers has achieved. We will continue to support him as he continues to work toward his dream.
