Blaze Soccer: Kicking Through the Season

Midway through the season, the Blackman boys’ soccer team holds a record of 4-1-2 with four wins, one tie, and two losses.

After a rain delay Tuesday night, April 18th, the Blaze picked up a 4-0 victory, shutting out the Stewarts Creek Red Hawks.

“We created many opportunities and defended as a team which allowed us to dominate the game,” stated Matthew Jobe, senior team captain.

Jobe scored two of the goals in that game, helping extend the lead for the Blaze. This year’s games are scheduled differently. Each team gets a home and away game against each opponent.

“Going into a game, there is no room for selfishness; be ready to make a game winning pass,” said junior Carson Kennedy.

Kennedy explained that teamwork contributes greatly to pulling out a win in a match. With playing the same team twice, the strengths and weaknesses of a team will be noticed.

To change it up, the Blaze can play different formations on the field: a 3-5-2 and a 4-5-1. A 3-5-2 consists of three defenders, five midfielders, and two forwards. A 4-5-1 consists of four defenders, five midfielders, and one forward.

“The ability to change formations during a game is very effective,” stated sophomore Nemo Lazo, who also scored a goal for the Blaze Tuesday the 18th.

With pre-season play being in full swing, Coach Vice noted that he is working the boys hard. He is hoping to further their season into region play once again.

“We don’t practice until we get it right; we practice until we can’t get it wrong,” said Vice.

The Blaze is working towards another district championship, following last year’s performance.
